e-Navigation Underway North America 2018

e-Navigation Underway (North America), a two day conference, is scheduled for 2-3 October and will be hosted by the California Maritime Academy at its campus in Vallejo, California. Organized under the auspices of IALA the theme of the conference is e-Navigation:  Opening the Door to the Future – Emerging technologies and their impact in the maritime industry.  Material presented will recognize that the development of e-navigation parallels advancement of what’s often termed “The Information Age”, and will introduce significant changes affecting the maritime industry.  The rate of change is accelerating and the effects on maritime operations and the work force will be significant.  In order to examine future requirements the conference will focus on a spectrum of likely developments, from those on the calendar for 2019 to those perhaps 20+ years in the future.  The range of possible topics is illustrated by S-Mode for ECDIS, scheduled for decision next year to those like “Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications (AAWA)” as undertaken by Rolls Royce.

The conference will provide a snapshot of the major e-navigation developments which most probably will occur within a twenty year planning horizon, and do so in sufficient detail to stimulate thought and planning about the nature of the future maritime work force and the educational and training base needed to support it.  Selected near-term future e-navigation developments will also be examined to help conferees understand what those developments involve, achieve an understanding of how those developments will affect them and provide an opportunity for them to provide input to the process.
