A machine fitted with horizontal drums or barrels on which fibre or wire ropes are wound. Used for hoisting or handling.


Note : Ship winches are classified according to use, and may be hand or power driven.


Examples are :

  • Derrick hoisting winch
  • Derrick topping winch
  • Derrick slewing winch
  • Boat winch
  • Towing winch
